3 Reasons You’re Not Feeling better Even Though You are On Thyroid Medication
Are you one of the millions of people who take thyroid medication but really don’t feel much better? You’re not alone. I hear all too often from clients that they started on thyroid medication and felt better for a short time, but it was not long lasting. This article will discuss 3 reasons why that good feeling was only temporary.
The Effects of Stress
Do you have stress in your life? Everyone does and that stress takes a toll on your adrenal glands, which in turn affects your sex hormones and your thyroid. Cortisol, also known as your body’s stress hormone, is made in the adrenal glands and can be tested, and then supported, accordingly. This is often a missing piece as to why people don’t feel well and is the first reason you’re not feeling well.
Your Sex Hormones
The second reason is that your sex hormones are also involved. The average age of peri menopause for most women is 41, and it’s common for a woman’s progesterone levels to decrease. This produces symptoms similar to that of thyroid symptoms, such as fatigue, brain fog, mood disturbances, and decreased sex drive.
T4 to T3 Conversion
The thyroid actually has a twofold mechanism in its functioning that involves two hormones, T4 and T3. The body, in the liver, must convert T4, into the usable form of thyroid hormone, T3. Breakdown occurs when our livers are not functioning optimally. The liver is the major detoxification organ in the body and as we experience stress, toxins, and our busy lives, our livers suffer an extra burden, thus this conversion either does not happen, or happens poorly.
The bottom line is that all our hormones are interconnected and rely on each other.
I think of it like a 3 legged footstool. The thyroid leans on your ovaries, which leans on your adrenals, which leans back on the thyroid. However, unfortunately, it’s often the case that only the thyroid hormones are tested.
